Body and person
Main Article Content
Abstract
This text examines the relationship between body and person, highlighting how the notion of “person” is a legal construct that has changed throughout history. Since the ancient Greco-Roman world —in which the biopolitical lens determined that only certain individuals were persons— the tension between human rights and state control of the body has become evident. It also addresses the crisis of so-called “human residues” (individuals who have lost their status as persons). One of the most important objectives of this analysis is to encourage reflection on the definition of person and the implications of this issue for the recognition of human dignity.
