Psychopathy and Its Relationship to Cognitive and Affective Empathy

Abstract
Empathy is a complex capacity with both affective and cognitive components, which are essential for social interaction and prosocial behavior. Its development begins in childhood and depends on biological, relational, and contextual factors. By distinguishing between cognitive and affective empathy, this chapter offers clues to understand how psychopaths can understand emotions without feeling them, facilitating manipulative and violent behaviors, which is crucial to understand the origin of antisocial behaviors, improve clinical diagnosis, and develop more effective interventions. However, its therapeutic application in psychopaths still faces important limitations.
